MUSIC THEORY INSTRUCTION

As a young musician I would frequently leave a concert feeling absolutely fired up, exhilarated, or otherwise overcome with a variety of emotions. Once I regained myself, I would locate these powerful, evocative pieces of music and try to figure out…why. What about this music provoked this reaction, or how did they achieve that sound? Thus began a lifelong study of music theory. On the surface, music theory looks like a set of rules to follow, but it can provide so much more in terms of musical construction, understanding and enjoyment. While the subject matter can indeed be complex or daunting, I use different angles and perspectives in teaching to find the way to make the material make the most sense to you.

Unlock the Language of Music

Understanding theory changes the way you hear, play, and create. Let’s build that foundation together.

Personalized Music Theory Instruction

Every student has a different relationship with theory, some have never touched it, others have bits and pieces but no real framework tying it all together. I figure out where those gaps are and build around them. We’ll work at a pace that makes sense for you, focusing on the concepts that are most relevant to your instrument, your goals, and the music you’re actually working on. No cookie-cutter curriculum,  just a clear, structured path that fits where you are right now.

“There’s no reason for a guitarist to have a big ego. You should love the instrument more than wanting to be a rock star””
