GUITAR INSTRUCTION

Taught the Way You Learn

I’ve learned there’s no single right way to learn guitar. Some people need method books, others want to jump into the songs they love. My job is to figure out what works for you and help you get there.

With a Master’s in Music Composition and conservatory training, I can teach theory at any level. But I also understand what it’s like to teach yourself, to work through techniques on your own until something finally clicks. I bring both worlds together.

Evolving on Guitar Together

Teaching is a passion that’s shaped who I am as a musician. Watching students discover their own talents, hearing them work through something they thought was impossible, seeing them find their voice on the instrument, that’s genuinely inspiring to me. Every student teaches me something about music and about teaching itself. You’re part of my evolution as an instructor and as a musician,  as much as I try to be for you as your mentor.

Let's Make Real Progress On Your Terms

Ready to move past what’s holding you back? Whether you’re picking up guitar for the first time or stuck on advanced techniques, let’s figure out what works for you and get you playing the music you love.

Personalized Guitar Instruction

With over 25 years of teaching, I’ve learned that every student is different. Some need structure. Others need freedom to explore. My job is to figure out what works for you. I don’t rush you through exercises that don’t make sense or push methods that aren’t landing. Instead, I watch how you approach the instrument, identify what clicks, and build on that.

GUITAR LESSON FAQ

Playing single notes is the most effective starting point for any beginning student. This also includes posture and hand placement for fretting and holding the pick.

Yes, although 6 years old is usually the youngest I will take on a new student.

We will work through a fundamental level of chords, scales, techniques, and theory. We will also choose an audition piece to prepare.

While reading standard notation is highly recommended, it is not a requirement. Most of the lesson material will be presented in tablature with an emphasis on converting the tab to notes.

Yes, practice exercises and song excerpts will be assigned during each lesson.

I usually furnish the student with written notes, PDFs or Guitar Pro files. Since there is such a vast amount of educational materials out there, we can also analyze and discuss other topics and approaches that you may come across.

I encourage any beginning student to work through a method book. I usually use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1 for a variety of melody and chord work as well as establishing a base for note reading.

An acoustic guitar is cheaper and can be played by itself but is physically harder to play (thicker strings, higher action) An electric guitar is easier to play at first, but requires more accessories and cost upfront. Any instrument in the range of $100-$300 should work to get started.

Yes, I can show you what to play and how to do it. However, shredding, or any technical style of playing, involves a commitment of time, practice, patience and discipline. I can show you how to shred, but I cannot practice for you.

Make sure you have a guitar, an amp if we are working virtually, and a spiral notebook for extra notes.

“There’s no reason for a guitarist to have a big ego. You should love the instrument more than wanting to be a rock star””

- Randy Rhodes
